Wrapping up COMMunity Fair
COMMunity Fair was quite the success, and we, the instructors and director, were nervous going in implementing a new project for 900 students (that would be the amount of students in COMM 1010). I heard good things about both class' booths from visitors and other instructors. Great job to everyone! Now though is the chance for you to share your input. As a new project, COMMunity Fair certainly needs fine-tuning because you simply can't account for everything that will arise the first time you implement such a large scale project. We have several changes in mind for next semester, but as an evolving project, input particularly from 1010 students, is much appreciated. So here are some questions:

Yes, I think the COMMunitiy Fair should be centered around a social issue and organization. I think people are better able to relate to these kinds of topics. As for staying in the same group, I think the groups need to change. I can understand why it could be beneficial to remain in the same groups, since people already know each other. But if you did not like your group or something, then maybe variety would be nice. (I liked my group, I'm just hypothetically saying.) I liked how the entire class split up the work into separate groups. It made it a lot easier than having each whole class working on the project.
ReplyDeleteI think it's good to have the focus on a social issue...it might be cooler, since the name is the COMMunity fair, to really hone it in to where all the issues and organizations we use are right in or around Denton! That would really tighten it up.
ReplyDeleteThe organization of it was alright. I think what was so confusing for me and my group was having our stuff for this AND the our in-class project about a social issue due at the same time. I think making those more different from each other would be good or swapping the order of our last speech with the group project. That would also give us a chance to be in different groups, if we wanted. I think it's really good to work in different.
I agree, the community fair should be be centered around a social issue. I think it's really interesting to not only learn about the issue but to be able to bring awareness of it to others. I think it would be less complicated if there were separate groups for the community fair and the intercultural communications project. It would make the two less likely to get intertwined and confusing.
ReplyDeleteI think that the COMMunity fair went off without a hitch. I liked the idea that it was all centered around an organization/social issue, I think it'd be really cool if they were all different social issues also. The social groups also helped connect the project to class concepts - we were all learning together while getting to know each other. Overall, the project created a broader scope of informational knowledge about gender equality in America - especially for women.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was a good idea to have to the fair idea based on a social issue, so people can learn more about certain issues in the United States; I don't think having an organization was really important the booth could have been about more than one organization on how to help the issue. I also liked staying in the same group for other projects, mainly because the whole group worked really well together and got to know each other rather than starting a new group and getting to know everyone from the start all over again.
ReplyDeleteI liked that the fair was centered around an issue and an organization so it shows people that they can help out. So many of these type of presentations just have information and no way to get involved. The community fair provided both. Our group stayed organized and knew exactly what to do based on the handout. I guess some people just need some extra reminders! I liked being in the same group. Sure, I didn't get to meet or become familiar with all of my classmates, but I felt as if we worked better together throughout the course.
ReplyDeleteThe project didn't have a HUGE impact on my life, as it was a topic I was already familiar with. However, I did learn more in depth to gender inequality and women's rights. Learning more about a topic is always helpful, even if it is not something vital at the moment. I liked how each group had their own part of the project and they were also dependent on each other. I was in the research group and without our part, there would be nothing to present! Same thing with all of the other groups; we all had a part in it. I think it would make it more interesting if the class got to pick their own research topic; brainstorm ideas in class and vote from 4 or so choices. Students may be more interested and will probably be more likely to have their part turned in on time and correctly.
The COMMunity fair was pretty neat I really enjoyed how it focused on women's rights and gender equality. Some changes I would suggest would probably be other issues in society and maybe we could get a representative from each organization to come to the fair and share information as well.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this project!! I felt like it was an opportunity to apply the material we learned in class to the real world. It was also an interesting challenge to be put into a team. I usually don't work in teams so this was quite a learning experience for me. It was also really interesting to see all of the other projects that people did. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the fair. I thought that this was an awesome project and it should be continued in the future.

It is a great way to bring light to a social issue that is not really discussed about. i think the fair was as organized as it could be and i really enjoyed it. as fas as groups though, i think if you like your group then staying in the same group would be good, and better. But if you don't then i am sure that they would want to change groups so that they can get the opportunity to work with other people in the class, but you cant please everyone and not everyone is going to get along, which is a lesson in life that everyone should be taught and should learn how to work with people that they don't like or cant get along with to get a project done and completed. the project had some impact on me and i'm glad that i got the chance to get to do it. I like how we got to go out into a main place that a bunch of students go so that everybody could see the issues, learn and have fun. I disliked how there were a bunch of different groups i think that each class should've been one big group.
ReplyDelete3. I personally think that it is much more effective to stay in the same group the entire semester. It gives you a group of people that you can rely on for this class as well as other classes and even as friends in general. Most importantly it lets us all better understand the course concepts of group development and interaction through application rather than just theory. It should be discussed more often in class how our group develops so we can better understand how everything works together and how it is applicable to our own particular groups.
ReplyDeleteThe community fair was a success. Any disorganization that went on was probably on the part of the groups more than the instructions. The groups should have stayed the same, because there is already some sort of relationship formed prior to a new assignment.
